Take on the role of Arkantos, head of the Greek forces Atlandida.

As its title indicates, the game has as background classical mythology. Gods, heroes and mythical creatures are mixed with conventional units. These additions are not only aesthetic, depth affect the entire game system.

Three are available cultures: Greeks, Egyptians and Norse, all different from each other, with features that reflect (more or less) the historical reality. However, and this is one of the innovations of this game, each culture has three gods. For example, Zeus, Hades and Poseidon in the Greek case. Each offers additional advantages, marking noticeable differences even between armies belonging to the same culture.

Likewise, every god has powers that we can use in battle. That's another novelty: rays fulminate a creature, meteor storms ... Obvious explain that these powers can decide the outcome of a confrontation as long as we use them wisely, as we employ only once per game.

But besides the elder gods, also come into play lesser gods. Whenever ascend Era, we were given a choice between two. These gods have advantages and additional powers and, especially, determine what kind of mythological creatures can recruit.

Heroes are achieved default, the beginning of each stage, and you can get each time we reach a new era. They are stronger and more skilled than conventional, with such legendary names as Hercules, Ulysses or Jason, and are virtually immortal (if they die, they can be re-recruiting) units. Creatures can train a new type of building, the Temple, and as mentioned, their type is determined by the gods they worship.

Pros

  • The solo campaign, an exciting tour of all the icons and scenes from classical mythology.
  • The many possible combinations of cultures, major and minor gods, who makes every army unique.

Cons

  • Graphics can be quite poor now

One of the best strategy games of all times with multiple features

This strategy game is the first game of this genre I played a few years ago, and nowadays I'm haven't got bored about it. Even though it is a bit old now, it has everything you need for a good strategy game. You have to develop your civilization, build your fortified city, pray for the God's favors and create your amazing mythological creatures. The main campaign is quite interesting, and it compels you to use the three mayor civilizations, Norse, Egyptian and Greek. This way, you will get used to them before you play it in the sub campaigns that are available. There is also the Titans extension, which offers a new campaign and the ability to control Titans.

You can also create your own map to play, and you do it at will. you can decide what kind of terrain you will use (beach, forest, desert, etc.), the water you want to add, place buildings, Wonders, armies or mythological creatures. Once you have created the map, you can use it to play the game more you want, either Conquest, Supremacy, etc. In addition, you can choose how many enemies you want to fight against.

Pros

  • The main campaign is very interesting
  • You can use three different civilizations
  • The game features Fenix creatures!!

Cons

  • It is a bit old

Review

Age of Mythology is a real-time strategy game that has been developed by Ensemble Studios and published by Microsoft. Instead of focusing on actual history as with the Age of Empires saga, this adventure is focused on mythology. This spin-off offers new and more interesting features such as the ability to create mythological creatures (phoenix, Cyclops, colossus, etc.). When playing, you will focus on three civilizations: Greek, Egyptian and Norse. As with the previous games, you have to collect resources such as gold, food and good, and also favor. Thanks to favor, you will be able to create the above-mentioned mythological creatures.

You will know the story of Arkantos, an Atlantean hero who undertakes a journey to recover the trident that has been stolen

Age of Mythology has a very interesting main campaign named "The Fall of the Trident". Here, you will know the story of Arkantos, an Atlantean hero who undertakes a journey to recover the trident that has been stolen. The thief is a Cyclops named Gargarensis. He wants to use the Trident to unleash Cronos the Titan, to be able to become immortal. This way, Arkantos visit the Underworld, Egypt, the North and even the Mount Olympus to defeat Gargarensis and his allies.

Graphically speaking, this adventure is well designed. You can see all details and textures, but nevertheless you cannot forget that the game is a decade old, so compared to the videogames of today, it can look a bit dated. However, something that never gets old is the soundtrack. The music perfectly accompanies you throughout the story, and it is relaxing when it must be, and violent when you fight.

Gods, favor and more Gods

As mentioned, you will have three civilizations to choose once you download Age of Mythology. In the main campaign, you cannot choose since you will pass for every civilization as you complete missions. However, in the single-player mode you can choose which civilization want to play for and develop your own strategy. The Greeks adore the major Gods: Zeus, Poseidon and Hades. You will have to choose between them and each one offers you different abilities and heroes. As you upgrade Ages (from Archaic, to Classical, to Heroic and finally Mythic), you can choose new minor Gods to adore. To gain the favor of your God, you must send villagers to the temples and make them pray. The more villagers praying, the more favor you will gain. You can only create four heroes, but this is because they are the strongest of all civilizations, and they have special powers such as turning people into stone.

You will focus on three civilizations: Greek, Egyptian and Norse.

The Egyptian civilization adores as major Gods Ra, Set, and Isis. Their army is weak, but numerous, and they have one the best mythological creatures of the adventure, phoenixes. Phoenixes are able to fly and throw ranged attacks. Only archers can hit them, and if they die, they leave an egg from which they reborn after a while. To gain the favor of their Gods, they have to build five monuments that automatically generate favor.

Finally, you will have the Norse civilization. They are very strong in regards to army and offensive, but their buildings are weak. They are the most different civilization since villagers cannot build their buildings; it's the troops who do it. Villagers only collect resources. They adore Loki, Thor and Odin, and to gain their favor they have to fight and combat. Their heroes, the Hersir, automatically generate favor, and when they combat, they generate a great amount of it.

Age of Mythology Features

The outstanding features of Age of Mythology are:

  • Three civilizations to choose from, each one with its own Gods, mythological creatures, heroes and features
  • Several game modes to play: Campaign, Multiplayer and Single-Player (with more modes within: Supremacy, Conquest, etc.)
  • Very catchy storyline in which you will follow the adventures of the Atlantean Arkantos
  • Real-time strategy gameplay
  • Gods will offer you special and divine powers to help you
  • You are free to use codes to make your adventure easier (but this is cheating!)
