Boomerang for Gmail is a free application that works as a plugin for your Gmail account and that allows you to schedule emails for a later time and date, plus set reminders to follow up on important emails. It is a useful tool for those times when you need to remember to pay bills, communicate with people in different time zones or clear out travel confirmation messages, reinstating them to your inbox on your trip day, amongst many others.
Schedule emails for a later time and date and set reminders to follow up on important emails
With Boomerang for Gmail you can write a message and have it delivered whenever it’s the right time. This way it will get to your inbox at the time you need to receive it. This option is labeled as “Return to Inbox” and is the perfect tool to suit the tendency for us to send ourselves a message as a reminder. Similarly, you can set reminders for important events and messages; simply tapping the message and tapping the time. “Send Later” messages are those you compose at a particular time, and configure to be sent at a different one –it will be sent even if you are offline. There is a red button to perform this action, where you can select the time you would like it to be sent. There you can also schedule “Recurring” emails.
Boomerang for Gmail understands natural language such as “next week” or “5 min”, so scheduling turns out to be even easier. You can even select a random time if desired. It supports Google Chrome, Safari and Firefox browsers and it only works with Google Apps and Gmail accounts. For this reason, some potential users claim they miss the support for other popular email clients like Yahoo.
How does it work?
Once you are done with the download and setup process of this plugin, you will soon discover that your account has much more possibilities you did not explore yet. It works by placing a Boomerang drop-down menu in your Gmail interface, located next to the “More Actions” button. There you can select any of the predefined scheduling times or customize a new one. It works in the same way for Bulk Boomerang, since the only thing that changes is that you have to previously select the messages involved.
In Boomerang for Gmail there are three types of scheduled messages: Return to Inbox, Send Later and Recurring. To view all of them you just need to go to “Manage scheduled messages” on the Boomerang menu, and click on the subject line to visualize any of them. To reschedule or cancel or a Boomerang'd email, open the message in question and select any of the options displayed within its body (Reschedule, Return Now or Don’t Return). If you prefer to do so from the built-in management menu, then go to the “Manage scheduled messages” module we previously mentioned. When it comes to Send it Later and Recurring messages, you will even be able to edit the body of the message. Pending messages will have a grey striped background for you to know that they have not been sent yet. When you Boomerang a message you can include a note that will be added to the conversation when the email returns to your inbox. These notes can be easily removed clicking on “Delete this message” from the drop down menu of the message thread.
